Introduction to OpenStreetMap
Published on November 8, 2026
OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a collaborative, open-access geographic database of the world, built and maintained by a global community of volunteers. Often described as the “Wikipedia of maps”, OSM provides the foundational geospatial data powering navigation apps, humanitarian response efforts, academic research, and urban planning worldwide.
This introductory, single lecture, course will teach you how the OpenStreetMap ecosystem functions, how its core data model is structured, and how to effectively map real-world features using standard editing tools.
During the course we will also demonstrate how to work with iD, one of the most popular editors of OSM. If you want to follow along, you can do so by creating an OpenStreetMap account at the following link: https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/new.
The course will be taught in English 🇬🇧
The recording be also be available on our Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@polimappers/.
